The often times harder recovery, the risks, all of the things. It’s also important to note that having a C-section is not a failure on your bodies part. Having a C-section once does not mean you are destined to have a C-section every time, and you CAN have a positive C-section experience whether planned or unplanned. Did you know doulas support planned C-sections?! We are here to support you however you want/need to give birth. I will leave you with these affirmations 🤍

We encourage all of our clients to have a birth plan to help us know what is most important to them, to have ease of access to their preferences and to help us advocate best for our clients.
A birth plan is not a hard and fast rule book, it is a guide of preferences to help create clear communication of what families want out of the birth experience, while giving space for a backup plan.
As doulas it gives us a reference point to help direct your care team to, and it encourages conversation around all of your options with them and with each other.
Birth does not always go accordingly to plan, but a birth plan (really should be called a birth preferences guide) is there when one area needs a plan B, we can move towards really prioritizing other areas plan A.

You as the parent need to be:
1. A NON SMOKER: The NUMBER ONE cause of SIDS is smoke exposure. Either secondary or from third hand smoke (which is from the chemicals left in your hair, on your skin, clothes, fabrics etc.) Both cigarettes and marijuana (especially if not home grown without extra chemicals) are included in this. Commercial Marijuana shares many of the same chemicals as cigarettes. It is important to note that other people holding your baby who have smoked and haven’t changed their clothes and washed their hands pose a SIDS risk to your infant.

2.SOBER: All adults in the bed must be sober. That is from drugs (marijuana included) alcohol, narcotic pain medications, medications that cause drowsiness ex; Benadryl. ANYTHING that alters the mind/body.

3. BREASTFEEDING: I will dive more into this in stores (which I will highlight and have at the top of my page) to note here - formula feeding is the 4th biggest risk factor for SIDS.

Your baby needs to be:
4. HEALTHY/FULL TERM: at least 5.5 pounds. Smaller babies have a harder time protecting their airways

5. SLEEPING ON THEIR BACKS: when not actively feeding, babies should be laid on their backs.

6: UNSWADDLED: lightly dressed. We do not want anything stopping baby from being able to reach their arms out, turn their heads freely, or have extra fabrics around for them to grab at. We also do not want your body heat, blankets and swaddles to make baby too hot.

You both need to be:
7. SAFE SURFACE: A couch or chair are not safe spaces for your baby to be cosleeping. Couches have lots of cracks, folds and tend to be plushier. Arm chairs keep awkward positioning for moms arms and baby can easily slip down and block their airway.

Childcare can be a major stressor for families, especially as first time parents. Trusting someone else to care for your kids in a way that honors your choices as a parent is so important. I would personally say that being picky is a necessity for protecting your children.
Here are 4 of my top tips!
1. Plan ahead! A lot of daycares have 6month to 1 year long waitlists for new families which can lead to parents choosing any facility that has an opening. Even if you plan to do private childcare with a nanny or do a nanny share, it’s important to build a relationship with that person, vet them. Run a background check, do extra meetings, take your time!!
2. Manage your expectations ahead of time: this means getting clear on what you need from your provider. Include any and all tasks you might want them to do. Even if it’s not an everyday thing, it’s better to have someone think they need to do more and end up doing less than it is to say you need less and end up needing more! If you think you’re going to ask them to do errands, take kids to events/activities/etc now or in the future, map out what all of that might look like before you hire them.
3. Have a contract! This is a great way to track all of those expectations you set. This protects the family and the childcare provider. This would be a great place to list allergies, emergency contacts, insurance information, tasks you expect, supplies the provider needs, pay, hours, vacation/sick time, rules etc.
4. Take your time!! Who you have around your kids is not a decision that should be taken lightly and should not be made out of desperation. Being able to take your time requires you follow tip #1 😜

Pregnancy, postpartum and parenthood adds so much to a mothers mental load. Often times mothers are working through their pregnancies, still maintaining a home and are quite literally carrying the load. The amount of research, decisions and planning we are responsible for can feel very overwhelming and it can feel like we are doing it alone since we are the ones going through the physical parts of pregnancy. Then we move into postpartum and it’s our bodies that are healing, our hormones that are wild and we have to figure out breastfeeding and figuring out what is normal. Mothers tend to take the lead on parenting decisions and researching all the things from BLW to sleep, behavior, planning activities etc. All while having so many things to keep track of. These are simple ways for partners to get involved and share the load. Remember that our bodies and brains change SO much and Dads simply do not go through what Mothers do. We have different roles and that’s okay!! But managing expectations and speaking out loud what we need, is how we get our needs met!

The reality is that after giving birth, most people feel pretty rough for at least a few days (and, more realistically, a few weeks). Not only are you recovering from the physical feats of nine months of pregnancy and giving birth (which may or may not include surgery), but you’re also establishing a milk supply, adjusting your own hormone, fluid, and nutrient levels, caring for your newborn around the clock, and healing. During this time, it’s critical that you rest to allow your body to begin to heal from everything that it’s been through. When you take on too much physical activity too soon, you put yourself at risk of increased bleeding, hemorrhage, infection, reduced milk supply, postpartum mood disorders, difficulty bonding with your baby, and so much more. Prioritizing your healing (both physical and emotional) will allow you to be a healthier, happier, and more present parent to your baby.

In most cases, it takes about 4-6 weeks for that wound to be mostly healed. If you feel great sooner than that, amazing! Celebrate that, and then go right back to resting.

Lets talk more about the importance of Tone in your uterus when it comes to postpartum hemorrhage. If your uterus cannot contract, it cannot stop bleeding. So why does this happen? An overworked, tired uterus is usually to blame.
Excessive exposure to labor-inducing medications, such as synthetic oxytocin, can sometimes desensitize the body and subsequently lead to uterine atony. Aka.. being induced. Pitocin is not meant to be used for augmentation of healthy pregnancies and it DOES carry risk. Uterine Atony being one of the risks, interestingly enough you then need more Pitocin to help..

Uterine Atony (loss in TONE of the uterus) is the leading cause of postpartum hemorrhage (Next post will go over risk factors/causes of uterine atony) this is when the uterine muscles become soft or “floppy” and can no longer contract properly, stopping the uteruses ability to slow down bleeding. Which is very serious and deadly. Pitocin is most often used and is standard in all hospitals as an active management, Pitocin forces the uterus to contract which will help slow bleeding.

TISSUE: Sometimes, a piece of the placenta is left behind in the uterus, It’s not common, but it can be serious. It can cause problems days or weeks after the birth. Retained placenta can lead to severe infection or life-threatening blood loss for the mother. A provider may attempt to remove the tissue manually, but in some cases a d&c is required.
 THROMBIN: While a blood clotting disorder is the least common cause of PPH, it is an important one to note because you may not know you have a clotting disorder if it hasn’t caused you any problems previously. You may need to be given medications in future pregnancies to help prevent a PPH from happening again. Anemia is also apart of this, and it is why your iron levels are tested throughout your pregnancy!

Uterine Atony (loss in TONE of the uterus) is the leading cause of postpartum hemorrhage (Next post will go over risk factors/causes of uterine atony) this is when the uterine muscles become soft or “floppy” and can no longer contract properly, stopping the uteruses ability to slow down bleeding. Which is very serious and deadly. Pitocin is most often used and is standard in all hospitals as an active management, Pitocin forces the uterus to contract which will help slow bleeding.

This week I’m going to share all about postpartum hemorrhage.
This is a very important topic as PPH is the leading cause of maternal death during labor/delivery. Here we can see the two management/treatment styles you will come across. One is an expectant management style which you will find more often in midwifery models of care in out of hospital settings with providers that trust the bodies process and keep a close eye on any signs of an actual emergency. (My next post will go into the 4 components of PPH and what your provider will be watching out for in order to treat a PPH) This is a hands off approach where your body is given time (if it’s safe) to contract on its own to help stop bleeding. Only if there is excess bleeding will a treatment be used.
Then we have active management which is a hands on approach that you will find as standard practice in all hospital settings. This is the “step in and intervene” approach, Pitocin is given via IV immediately after delivery of the baby, it is used to “prevent” a hemorrhage from happening. Interestingly enough Pitocin use during labor is a major risk factor for uterine atony and PPH.

Pitocin use as a standard practice for after birth care increases risks of uterine rupture and subsequent hemorrhage. Though it is the most useful and quickest treatment option with the least risk if there is an actual hemorrhage!

In low risk pregnancies the “risks” of continuous fetal monitoring is greater than the “risk” of an undisturbed labor. Your body needs to be able to move!! Aside from knowing your rights in labor, freedom of movement is one of your biggest assets in labor! One of the best ways to keep labor progressing, keep labor pain manageable and shorten your labor is to MOVE. You are not meant to labor strapped down to a bed!
Fetal monitoring in labor has an important place, but remember, any and EVERY intervention disturbs the natural process of labor. Every intervention comes with risk, iv fluids, continuous monitoring, unnecessary cervical checks, not being “allowed” to eat. All of it!
Now in high risk pregnancies the “risks” of not doing some of these is higher and that is when they should be used! Birth is not a medical event, trust your baby, trust your body!!
